Jack Richardson (Between Times), DJ and producer based in Shanghai

Book & Learn

I’m Jack, the producer and DJ behind Between Times. I grew up on the London/Essex border with garage coming out of every car window, and I’ve spent 15 years in music, the last two of them playing and making music in Shanghai. I’m also a music teacher, so I teach the way I’d want to be taught: hands-on, in the software, no jargon for the sake of it.

Book a DJ

Private parties, brand events, corporate nights, weddings and club sets across Shanghai. I read a room fast and play for it: soulful and funky house, garage and R&B when the night wants energy, Latin and reggaeton for a mixed floor, and something smoother over dinner and drinks.

  • Events: launches, corporate parties, weddings, private parties, rooftops and clubs
  • Played: POP, Bellagio, Hotel Indigo Rooftop, FLAIR, Edition, and a former residency at Stardust with What The Funk
  • Kit: I bring my own AlphaTheta XDJ-AZ or Omnis-Duo, or play on the venue’s CDJs

Learn production or DJing

One-to-one and small-group lessons in Ableton Live and DJing, in my home studio in Shanghai or online, starting January 2027. You’ll learn on the same gear I use: AlphaTheta decks, Ableton Push and Move, and Maschine. Beginners are welcome, and so are producers sitting on a folder of unfinished eight-bar loops.

  • 1:1 lessons: 60 minutes, built around the track you actually want to make
  • Short courses: e.g. UK garage in Ableton, over 4 weeks
  • DJ basics: beatmatching, structure, reading a floor, building a set

Leave your details and you’ll hear about first dates and prices before anyone else. I’ll only use them to contact you about lessons.

Your level, the gear you use, or what you want to make. Optional.

FAQ

What do you bring to a gig?

My own AlphaTheta XDJ-AZ or Omnis-Duo, or I’ll play on the venue’s CDJs. If you need a sound system as well, mention it when you get in touch.

How long do you play?

Anything from a short dinner set to a full night. Send me the timings and I’ll shape the set around them.

Can we request songs?

Yes. Send must-plays, no-plays and the feel you’re after, and I’ll build them in. On the night I’ll still read the room.

I’m a complete beginner. Can I still have lessons?

Yes. We start with what you want to make or play, and build the skills around it.

Do I need my own gear?

Not for lessons in my studio: you’ll use my decks, Push, Move and Maschine. For online lessons you’ll need a computer with Ableton Live. The free trial is fine to start.

How much are lessons?

Prices go to the waiting list first, along with the January dates.
